The academic research of the Design Aesthetics section is closely related to the education it provides in lectures and work groups, workshops and study and design assignments in both the BSc and MSc phase. The essence of the research is the perception aspects and the (appreciation of) product aesthetics, the role of emotion in product design and incorporating meaning in product design (symbolism, association, cultural and social meaning, etc.)

Within the important research into all sensory modalities, attention is also paid to tactility and sound. The Design Aesthetics section wants use its outlook to broaden the knowledge field of the functional design engineer, expand problematic design definitions into a range of possibilities and thereby create a relationship with a modern, technological world.
