How do you design objects with an intention?

Designing smart objects for everyday life demands a new approach: no longer focused on a single object and a single user, but on an ecological system of countless objects and users. This approach is central in the new Delft Design Lab for Expressive Intelligence and the recently published book Designing Smart Objects in Everyday Life.

Minister of OCW visits Green Intensive Care Room
On Monday, 11 October the Minister of Culture, Science and Education Ingrid van Engelshoven visited the Green Intensive Care Room at Convergence Square. During her extensive tour of the facility, IDE Associate Professor JC Diehl, alongside Prof. Diederik Gommers, and Dr. Nicole Hunfeld from Erasmus MC, presented their work and findings to her. They explained that (on average) seven bags of waste per patient, per day were being produced at the Intensive Care Unit.

IDE professor presents Healthy Start to Minister of OCW
On Monday, 11 October the Minister of Culture, Science and Education Ingrid van Engelshoven visited the Convergence - a collaboration between TU Delft, Erasmus MC, and Erasmus University Rotterdam. IDE professor Maaike Kleinsmann, alongside her colleagues Eveline Crone (Erasmus University), and Vincent Jaddoe (Erasmus MC), presented their new Convergence flagship project Healthy Start to Minister van Engelshoven.

James Dyson Award – IDE alumnus makes it into global top 20
IPD alum Jerry de Vos’ Plastic Scanner has been selected for the James Dyson Award’s Global Top 20. Jerry’s Plastic Scanner, alongside the other 19 inventions, was chosen from over 2,000 entries. Now that he is in the top 20, he has the chance to become the global winner and receive £30,000 to support the next stages of their inventions.

TU Delft at Dutch Design Week 2021
Dutch Design Week (DDW): it’s one of the highlights of the European design calendar and an event in which IDE design research plays a prominent role together with Design United - the 4TU. Federation’s research centre for design. This year Dutch Design Week will take place between 16-24 October. And after a purely digital Dutch Design Week last year, this autumn Design United is back - live and with plenty of in person events.

IDE assistant professor wins Young Investigator Award
Last week at the Symposium on Solid and Physical Modeling, IDE assistant professor Jun Wu was awarded the Young Investigator Award from the Solid Modeling Association. Jun was recognised for his outstanding technical contributions at the intersection of solid modelling, physical modelling, and advanced manufacturing.

Jose Martínez Castro is IDE’s 7500th graduate!
On Friday (1 October), IDE celebrated its 7500th graduate! It is a milestone that our faculty, staff and students alike, can be proud of. Our dean Ena Voûte, alongside IPD programme director Professor Gert Kortuem, surprised Jose Martínez Castro after his defence. Jose graduated from IPD under Professor Elvin Karana, tenured Assistant Professor Jun Wu, and PhD candidate Alice Buso.

TU Delft & MIT publish article in Urban Studies
IDE Assistant Professor Achilleas Psyllidis, PhD candidate Roos Teeuwen, and Professor Alessandro Bozzon, in collaboration with MIT Senseable City Lab, and AMS Institute, have written and published an article on ‘Cities and infectious diseases: Assessing the exposure of pedestrians to virus transmission along city streets.’ The article is published in Urban Studies (a top-tier journal in the field), under a gold open access license.

Is the robe in that painting velvet or satin?

Staring at one of the richly drawn paintings in Amsterdam’s famous Rijksmuseum, you might recognise that the robe worn by the subject of the painting is made of velvet and the cup on the table is made of silver. Your eyes only see swirls of paint but your brain understands what the artist was depicting. As part of his thesis research, Mitchell van Zuijlen wanted to understand how this is possible.

NWO-INSPiRED project wins NTD Innovation Prize
On 9 September 2021, the NWO-INSPiRED project was awarded the prestigious Neglected Tropical Diseases (NTD) Innovation Prize. The award-winning proposal is built around the Schistoscope, a novel device that combines technical optics and specialised data-driven algorithms to create an integrated, portable, reliable smart optical diagnostic system for schistosomiasis. The INSPiRED team (a collaboration between TU Delft (IDE-3ME), LUMC, and three Sub-Saharan research partners) is honoured to receive the award and $20,000. They will use this money to continue testing and evaluating the Schistoscope in Nigerian primary schools and to help implement the device in the local healthcare system

Start of Green Intensive Care Room at the Convergence Square
This week, three IDE students began working at the new Green Intensive Care Room in the newly opened Convergence Square at Erasmus MC. Their mission? Find ways to limit the environmental impact of the healthcare sector. During their projects they will map and visualise the current practices and will then design and prototype solutions within the Green Intensive Care Room. IDE's Karl Heinz Samenjo shares his story at OAY ‘21-‘22
At this year’s Opening of the Academic Year ceremony, IDE PhD researcher Karl Heinz Samenjo took to the stage to share his story and his dream. Inspired by the event’s theme, ‘current dreams of global impact’, Karl talked about his dream of creating circular designs for medical product-service systems in Sub-Saharan Africa. His PhD research (under the supervision of Professor Conny Bakker and Associate Professor JC Diehl) involves developing local producible medical devices like the #Schistoscope. Hats off to Kaspar Jansen, Linda Plaude, and Lennart Teunissen
The Olympic Games in Tokyo were predicted to be one of the hottest on record. Luckily the Dutch team had ‘coolcaps’ to help them beat the heat. The hat, while it may look simple, has a lot going on underneath its hood. Designed by IDE researchers Kasper Jansen, Linda Plaude, and Lennart Teunissen, the hat can now be viewed at the OS. On the 23rd of August, the bachelor revision team hosted Education Inspirations to mark the official launch of IDE’s renewed Bachelor in Industrial Design Engineering. During the hybrid event, 94 people joined in to celebrate the milestone and learn more about semester one and three of the new programme.

James Dyson Award – IDE alumni take home 2 national runner-up spots
The James Dyson Award National winners have been announced. This year’s competition saw over 2,000 entries from 28 countries and regions. And while our alumni may not have placed first, they did take home the two “national runner up” spots. Plastic Scanner was submitted by IPD alumni Jerry de Vos, and Ziemi was submitted by IPD alumni Luci Santema and designer Elianne Koetzier. To find out more about their projects, read on.

Vaccination and/or testing on campus
Are you not (fully) vaccinated yet? You can get your vaccination on campus. The Municipal Health Services will be present at X (sports and culture centre) on Tuesday 31 August, Thursday 2, Wednesday 8 and on Friday 10 September from 08:30-15:30 with a temporary vaccination location. Students and employees (and anyone who wants to) can get vaccinated against Covid in the sports hall, without an appointment, without citizen service number (BSN) and – should you wish so – without identification.

IDE professor ranks #6 for articles published in innovation management journals
Researchers Christine Pitt, Andrew Park, and Ian P. McCarthy published an article titled “A bibliographic analysis of 20 years of research on innovation and new product development in technology and innovation management (TIM) journals” in the Journal of Engineering and Technology Management. DCODE welcomes 15 PhD fellows this summer
This summer 15 PhD researchers will join DCODE. The fellows were carefully chosen from a pool of 314 applicants from 53 countries. The group brings with it a diverse range of disciplinary backgrounds, skills, and expertise. Together with their TU Delft supervisors, they will work to create new foundations for design.
