IDE at ThingsCon’s Boutiques of Salons 2021

The 2021 virtual edition of ThingsCon’s Boutiques of Salons takes place tomorrow (10 December) from 17:30 – 20:00 CET. There will be talks by IDE Professor Elisa Giaccardi and alumni Simone Rebaudengo. This year’s event will also include the student IoT Talent Awards and a digital exhibition – both of which will feature three IDE graduation projects.

WeScope takes home BraunPrize 2021

On Thursday 18 November, the IPD master’s students behind the WeScope project received some fantastic news – their device had won a BraunPrize 2021. The WeScope is an open source, low-cost digital microscope designed to help train medical students in Sub-Saharan Africa. Connected Creativity: in the minor and beyond!

Together with the students from the Connected Creativity minor, a buzzing network event was hosted at the ID KAFEE on 2 November. Enthusiasts of creativity in innovation from various research institutes, governments, and organisations came together and were challenged to Connect to Create! Various initiatives organised by Katrina Heijne, Willemijn Brouwer, Han van der Meer, Milene Gonçalves, and the Connected Creativity students were shared during the event.

IDE researchers take the stage at Highlight Delft

From 18-20 November 2021, the fourth edition of Highlight Delft will take place across Delft, including the TU Delft campus. There will be 16 installations in which art and technology influence one another in order to experiment and discuss unexplored perspectives for our technological future. This year, two IDE researchers and one IDE graduate will have their work on display at the event. So don’t miss out on the following installations: IDE researcher Frederik Ueberschär with his Landshapes project, IDE Assistant Professor Doris Aschenbrenner and German musician Bruno Kramm with their Pandemic Robot Orchestra, and IDE graduate Tim van Dortmont with his Growing Light project. Get to know Greengage and the ENERGE Project

ENERGE is an Interreg NWE funded project aimed at “ENergising Education to Reduce Green-gas Emissions” in secondary schools. The project aims to equip schools with the tools they need to engage in low-cost energy-efficient practices. Eduscope shortlisted for Dubai Global Grad Show

The UBUNTU Eduscope, developed by one of IDE’s Advanced Embodiment Design (AED) teams, has been shortlisted for the Global Grad Show in Dubai. The UBUNTU Eduscope is an affordable, locally producible digital microscope for education in Sub-Saharan Africa. The concept of Eduscope is part of the NWO INSPiRED project.

TU Delft in top 50 for arts & humanities in THE Subject Rankings

In 2018, Times Higher Education labelled TU Delft as a “technology challengers”, alongside 34 other institutions. Of the 35 institutions that were given this title and that were also ranked in the arts and humanities subject rankings, 22 have improved their scores - including TU Delft. TU Delft, which is 21st in the world for engineering and 59th for computer science, has found a spot in the top 50 for the arts and humanities this year and is now in joint 42nd position. In an article written by Times Higher Education, IDE dean Ena Voûte was asked to weigh in on this exciting news.

Een beter milieu vanuit je luie stoel

Een modulaire stoel gemaakt van blokken waarin CO2 zit opgeslagen en die je kunt ombouwen tot andere meubels. Met zijn bijzondere ontwerp Unito wil Riel Bessai, onlangs afgestudeerd aan de faculteit Industrieel Ontwerpen, bovenal een verhaal vertellen. ‘Met mijn stoel maak ik het wereldwijde CO2-probleem tastbaar en hoop ik mensen aan te zetten om op een andere manier naar onze consumptiemaatschappij te kijken.’

Nieuwe samenstelling OKIO, spreekbuis voor staf en studenten

In haar rol als wettelijk inspraakorgaan vertegenwoordigt de OKIO alle medewerkers en studenten van deze faculteit, in haar gesprek met de opleidingsdirectie en faculteit. In sommige gevallen gaat het om advies, in andere gevallen om instemming. De OKIO (opleidingscommissie Industrieel Ontwerpen) is samengesteld uit verschillende vertegenwoordigers van de opleidingen IO, DfI, SPD en IPD, voor helft bestaand uit medewerkers (vijf man/vrouw) en voor de andere helft uit studenten.

Design voor dovencultuur en gezondheid

Patiënten die hun medicijnen niet op de voorgeschreven manier innemen is een wijdverbreid probleem. Maar een combinatie van sociale barrières, discriminatie en moeite met geschreven taal betekent dat de dovengemeenschap het nog moeilijker heeft. Deze medicatie-ontrouw kan gevaarlijk zijn voor patiënten, ziekte verlengen en de gezondheidszorg onder druk zetten. Ph.D. onderzoeker Prangnat Chininthorn wilde manieren vinden om dit te verbeteren en dove mensen te helpen hun eigen gezondheid beter te beheren.

Hoe ontwerp je voorwerpen met een intentie?

Slimme voorwerpen zijn pas slim wanneer ze zinvolle relaties met hun omgeving aangaan. Het ontwerpen van slimme voorwerpen voor het alledaagse leven vraagt om een nieuwe aanpak: niet langer gericht op één voorwerp en één gebruiker, maar op een ecologisch systeem van talloze voorwerpen en gebruikers. Die aanpak staat centraal in het nieuwe Delft Design Lab for Expressive Intelligence en het net verschenen boek ‘Designing Smart Objects in Everyday Life’.

Minister of OCW visits Green Intensive Care Room

On Monday, 11 October the Minister of Culture, Science and Education Ingrid van Engelshoven visited the Green Intensive Care Room at Convergence Square. During her extensive tour of the facility, IDE Associate Professor JC Diehl, alongside Prof. Diederik Gommers, and Dr. Nicole Hunfeld from Erasmus MC, presented their work and findings to her. They explained that (on average) seven bags of waste per patient, per day were being produced at the Intensive Care Unit.

On Monday, 11 October the Minister of Culture, Science and Education Ingrid van Engelshoven visited the Convergence - a collaboration between TU Delft, Erasmus MC, and Erasmus University Rotterdam. IDE professor Maaike Kleinsmann, alongside her colleagues Eveline Crone (Erasmus University), and Vincent Jaddoe (Erasmus MC), presented their new Convergence flagship project Healthy Start to Minister van Engelshoven.

James Dyson Award – IDE alumnus makes it into global top 20

IPD alum Jerry de Vos’ Plastic Scanner has been selected for the James Dyson Award’s Global Top 20. Jerry’s Plastic Scanner, alongside the other 19 inventions, was chosen from over 2,000 entries. Now that he is in the top 20, he has the chance to become the global winner and receive £30,000 to support the next stages of their inventions.

IDE assistant professor wins Young Investigator Award

Last week at the Symposium on Solid and Physical Modeling, IDE assistant professor Jun Wu was awarded the Young Investigator Award from the Solid Modeling Association. Jun was recognised for his outstanding technical contributions at the intersection of solid modelling, physical modelling, and advanced manufacturing.

IDE postdoctoral researcher Guido Giunti Garcia took home the Junior Chamber International’s Ten Outstanding Young Persons Award in the Medical Innovations category.
