New research by scientists from Delft University of Technology and the University of Duisburg-Essen uses the motion of atomically thin graphene to identify noble gases. These gases are chemically passive and do not react with other materials, which makes it challenging to detect them. The findings are reported in the journal Nature Communications.

The Ministry of Education, Culture and Science is awarding a 142.7 million euro Gravitation grant to seven top consortia. Faculty 3mE researchers Frans van der Helm and Carlas Smith are co-applicants.

How can humans instantly estimate the slipperiness of a surface and adjust their gripping, for instance when picking up a wet glass? Researchers have demonstrated that a (radial) strain of the skin of the fingertip is involved in the perception of slipperiness during initial contact. Robotics could use this information, for instance to improve prosthetics and grippers. The results will be published in PNAS.

Researcher Jeroen van Oosterhout has developed a haptic assistance system that makes it easier to control two robots simultaneously. On Wednesday 1 May, he will be awarded his PhD at TU Delft for his work on the subject.

The Port & Maritime working group of the Dutch AI Coalition (NLAIC) has presented a position paper ‘Koersen op AI‘ (Heading for AI) on 10 June 2021, detailing the maritime ambitions in the field of AI. They received a dual appointment at two or more academic institutions (LUMC, Leiden University, TU Delft, Erasmus MC, Erasmus University) that are affiliated with Medical Delta. In the early morning of 22 April 2020, our dear former colleague professor Barend Thijsse passed away after a short illness as a result of lung cancer. Barend was 69 years old.

The Department Materials Science and Engineering has received the sad news that our highly appreciated professor-emeritus Prof. dr. Hans de Wit, passed away in the night of the 21st / 22nd January 2018 in Broek op Langedijk at the age of 71 years. His funeral will take place in Schagen on Saturday January 27.

It is with sadness that we learned of the passing of our dear colleague Cees van Rhee on Saturday 15 July 2023 during his holiday in France. Cees was professor of Dredging Technology at the Department of Maritime & Transport Technology at TU Delft since 2007.

There is a lot of progress still to be made when it comes to batteries and energy storage. The problem of storing energy is often underestimated however. Gradual evolution in the world of batteries is more likely than a revolution. TU Delft's new batteries lab will focus primarily on research into potential alternatives for what is currently the standard technology: the lithium-ion battery.

Remco Hartkamp, tenure-track lecturer of computational chemical physics at the Department of Process & Energy, developed a new method, together with researchers from the CNRS in France and the NTT Basic Research Laboratories in Japan, that will make it easier to measure the concentration of different electrolytes in the body using a nanotransistor.

Researchers from the Faculty of Mechanical, Maritime & Materials Engineering (3mE) are sharing the installation for testing face masks in a publication. Today, Medical Delta, the interdisciplinary consortium for technological solutions in healthcare, is announcing nine new Medical Delta professors. Two members of the 3mE faculty have been appointed, namely Jaap Harlaar, professor of biomechatronics & Human Machine Control, and Professor Gerjo van Osch, parttime professor Integrative Cartilage Regeneration at the department of BioMechanical Engineering and Principal Investigator Orthopaedics & Otorhinolaryngology at Erasmus MC.

The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) has awarded Vidi grants to seven TU Delft scientists. From the 3mE faculty Jan-Willem van Wingerden, professor Data Driven Control at Delft Center for Systems and Control, was honoured with an award.

The paper "Distributed Multi-Robot Formation Splitting and Merging in Dynamic Environments", by Hai Zhu, Jelle Juhl, Laura Ferranti, Javier Alonso-Mora has won the IEEE ICRA Best Paper Award on Multi-Robot Systems during the IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation, the robotics flagship conference celebrated in Montreal in May 2019. Congratulations!

The Netherlands Academy of Engineering (NAE) emphasises the importance of technological innovation with the appointment of 62 fellows. Among them are 11 researchers from TU Delft, two of whom work for the Faculty of Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering (3mE).

TU Delft professors Jenny Dankelman and Ronald Hanson are set to become members of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW). The KNAW chooses its members on the basis of their academic achievements. It currently has around 550 members. On Monday, 16 September 2019, nineteen new Academy members will be installed, including Dankelman and Hanson.

On Thursday 4 July, Jenny Dankelman, Professor of Minimally Invasive Surgery and Intervention Techniques at the Faculty of Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering (3mE), was informed by Delft University Fund that she will receive the prestigious Professor of Excellence Award 2019.

Professor Johan Padding was appointed full professor of complex fluid processing at the Department of Processing & Energy starting 23 October 2018.

On Wednesday 9 October, professor Johan Padding from the Complex Fluid Processing chair at the Department of Process & Energy will hold his inaugural lecture entitled ‘From chaos to order’.

John van den Dobbelsteen has been appointed professor of Medical Process Engineering. His research focuses on improving the interaction between surgical staff and medical technology, with a particular emphasis on alleviating hiccups in the workflow throughout the entire surgical process, from pre-op to post-op.

Joop Roodenburg, president of Huisman Equipment, has been elected TU Delft Alumnus of the Year 2019.

We are pleased to announce that Joost Lötters has been appointed as a part-time professor within the Department of Precision and Microsystems Engineering (PME) of the Faculty of Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Engineering (3mE).

De Winter’s research focuses on touchless interaction between robots and humans so that in the future, robots can read and understand the intentions and instructions of humans in their vicinity by means of eye-tracking and other sensors. And robots, in turn, will be able to adapt their functioning to communicate their own intentions both to nearby humans and other robots. The vision is to contribute to a future in which humans and robots share cognitive processes and adapt to each other.
