AiTech Agora: Lotje Siffels & Iris Muis - Zeitgeist and data: the danger of innovation

16 februari 2022 13:00 t/m 14:00 | Zet in mijn agenda

Technology and data are not neutral. They contain values and can affect our values. Therefore, any data project requires proper accountability and ethical deliberation. Municipalities and their officials are generally very skilled in thinking about public values, and justifying their projects in terms of public values. However, we have seen that this ethical discussion is often hampered by a drive for innovation. Specifically the idea that innovation is inevitable creates a feeling of powerlessness among civil servants, which means that they no longer feel that their ethical considerations will be consequential. This causes data projects in public policy to be pursued without careful deliberation or accountability.
