In March 2023, there will be a unique occasion: for the first time in more than 40 years a United Nations Conference will debate the challenges of the freshwater crisis and its solutions. In 2020, UN Secretary General António Guterres announced concern with the delays in progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). He called on the world to accelerate work to achieve in particular SDG6, on water and sanitation, as water is a cross-cutting topic that is key to almost all SDGs. Five accelerators were proposed: Finance, Data and information, Capacity development, Innovation and Governance.

Around the world in 24 hours

In just 24 hours we will go around the world and will connect researchers to debate on the research that is needed to accelerate the five pillars of the acceleration framework. The debate starts in New York on 20 March at 12:00 EST (17:00 CET), and after two hours, the debate, held online, is handed over to the next time zone. It will reach Europe 21 March at 11:00 CET, when experts from TU Delft, IHE Delft and others will start the two-hour debate. On the way the debate will be passed on and ideas and commitments will be picked up on.

The debate will be on the research and innovations that are needed to improve the five pillars of the SDG 6 acceleration framework. What research is needed to accelerate for example the financing of the water sector, or governance, capacity development.
