By: Arjan R. Stam Director of Network Management at Alliander

Date: Thursday 21 March 2024
Time: 12:45-13:30 (free lunch from 12:15)
Location: Faculty of EWI, Mekelweg 4 (Chip Hall)
Moderator: Dr Francesco Lombardi

Abstract: With the energy transition in full swing, Alliander began developing System Operations as a new capability three years ago to maximize grid utilization and is setting itself apart from traditional grid operations.

This talk will provide an overview of the technical achievements of Alliander’s System Operations so far and the technical challenges they are still facing in moving to real-time system operations. You’ll learn more about short-term and medium-term forecasting, topology generation from incomplete data and measurements, dynamic safety assessment for grid state management, intelligent decision-making for system behaviour optimization, and much more.

All the above topics and others covered by the talk are still under development at different levels of maturity in an integrated, flexible management system at Alliander. The system is operational and will automatically manage around 1900 congestion contracts at medium voltage levels and around 500 LV charging station contracts at the end of this year, doubling each year. A key area of interest is developing scalable solutions for “critical peak control,” such as direct control interfaces for residential heat pumps, which are growing exponentially.

Bio: Arjan holds an MSc in Aerospace Engineering from TU Delft. Following his university education, he embarked on his professional journey at Accenture, where he specialized in IT consulting. Post Accenture, Arjan contributed to KLM, implementing service management across various business units. His career then led him to Alliander, where he has dedicated over 15 years, initially starting in IT and subsequently embracing diverse roles within the department. In 2016, Arjan assumed the position of Director of Grid Operations, steering the company through the complexities of grid management. With a keen eye on the evolving landscape of the energy transition, he transitioned to the role of Director of System Operations in 2021, guiding the company through the strategic challenges and opportunities of the energy sector's future.
