A conversation on the EU's 2040 climate target and its implications for the power sector

29 februari 2024 12:45 t/m 13:30 - Locatie: Faculty of EWI, Mekelweg 4 (Chip Hall) | Zet in mijn agenda

By: Dr. Samantha Eleanor Tanzer, Assistant Professor in the Department of Engineering Systems and Services in the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management at the Delft University of Technology, specializes in complexities of greenhouse gas accounting for carbon removal systems

Moderator: Dr Francesco Lombardi

The European Commission has outlined a bold strategy for the EU to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040, anchored by a detailed six-hundred-page impact assessment. This strategy emphasizes transforming the electricity sector towards decarbonization and achieving net carbon-negative status within fifteen years. This presentation will explore the impact of these targets on the energy sector, analysing the potential for a carbon-negative future and its implications. It will also engage the PowerWeb community in assessing the feasibility of these ambitious climate goals and the necessary systemic transformations.

Samantha Eleanor Tanzer is an Assistant Professor and Delft Technology Fellow at the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management at TU Delft. Her current research focuses on the complexities of greenhouse gas accounting for carbon removal systems. She received her PhD from the same institution on the topic of "Negative Emissions in the Industrial Sector". Prior to rejoining TU Delft as faculty, Dr.ir. Tanzer worked at the climate policy NGO Bellona Europa, bringing nuance and a systems perspective to policy conversations on CDR.
