Let’s talk about Energy Transition – Prof Isabella on PV technology & green hydrogen

The world is transitioning to renewables, electricity based technologies, carbon-free and intelligent energy systems. What do we need to ‘speed up this energy transition’? This question forms the theme of TU Delft’s Lustrum celebrations. To help professionals and lifelong learners keep informed on the latest developments and relevant technologies, TU Delft Energy Accelerator Experts give a series of dedicated talks. Just another way in which our University plays an active part in accelerating the transition.

Professor Olindo Isabella is Head of the Photovoltaic (PV) Materials and Devices Research Group at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Sciences – and an enthusiastic online education lecturer, too. His passion for solar energy and PV systems is long standing. And it is this passion and a strong belief that PV installations have a huge role to play in the energy transition that drives his work and that of his team.

Currently they are investigating the integration of PV systems with hydrogen-based storage solutions. This novel, promising implementation was the subject of Professor Isabella’s recent talk in the online event hosted on 1 February 2022.

To delve deeper in the technology and discover the characteristics and operation of the various steps required to efficiently convert the energy of photons into electricity and green hydrogen, in small and large photovoltaic systems - visit Professor Isabella’s online program page Solar and Chemical Energy Conversions for Green Hydrogen.

The above figure from Professor Isabella’s presentation illustrates envisaged solutions for future electrical energy systems – encompassing digital technologies, new markets and services, and community microgrids.

Next in the series

10 March: Professor Peter Palensky on the digital transformation of our energy systems
31 March: Dr Axelle Viré on floating offshore wind energy

The talks are specifically organised for our Alumni community and part of the TU Delft for Life outreach activities. However, if you are interested in knowing more, please email extension-school@tudelft.nl to ask for a link to the recordings.

Lustrum program

The start of 2022 marks our university’s 180th birthday. To celebrate this Lustrum anniversary, TU Delft has organised 180 days of activities on the theme ‘Speeding up the energy transition’. See all planned events.
