Aza Alawi and Jelle Bootsma winners of the VerDelFT study prizes 2023

November 3, 2023

The winners of the VerDelFT study prices 2023 were announced at the annual meeting of TP's alumni association VerDelFT. Two prices were awarded: one for the best Bachelor thesis of TP and one for the best Master thesis of TP of last year.

VerDelFT Bachelor study price

Three candidates competed for the bachelor study price. It was a though decision for the jury to decide who would win the price.

The jury (consisting of Prof. Dr. Ir. Theo van der Meer (chairman), Dr. Ir. Martin Rohde and Dr. Ir. Joke Talman) wrote:
The choice was particularly difficult this year. The candidates were close to each other in terms of performance, and the standard of graduation reports was high. We have seen that the three candidates have done remarkable work over the past year.

The winner of the VerDelFT BSc study prize 2023 is Jelle Bootsma.

Jelle has shown impressive method development in his graduation research. He wrote no fewer than 1,800 lines (30 pages) of computer code to conduct his research. This shows enormous dedication and technical competence. It is not only the method development, but also the versatility of his work that has attracted the attention of the assessment committee. The work involves the modelling of a real description of the lungs, applying a number of types of breathing cycles and applying the complex transport phenomena that take place during the transport of aerosols. In addition, the committee appreciates the extent to which Jelle has validated his model using existing data from the literature. And, last but not least, Jelle distinguished himself by the great readability of his report. The ability to make such complex information accessible to others is an important skill, and Jelle has excelled at this. Jelle has already done a lot of work within the limited timeframe of only 9 weeks. An extraordinary achievement for which Jelle fully deserves the recognition and appreciation of the VerDelFT bachelor study prize. We look forward with great anticipation to what the future has in store for him.

Jelle worked on air flow in the lungs under the supervision of Prof. Sasa Kenjeres. The title of his Bachelor thesis was “Airflow in the lungs”.

Next to a certificate Jelle receives the study prize fund of € 500.

VerDelFT Master study price

Six master students were nominated for the master study price. The quality of their theses and the very broad range of topics were a challenge for the jury at choosing a winner.

The jury (consisting of Dr.ir Tim Peeters (chairman), Dr.ir Cees Haringa, Dr.ir. Wouter Harteveld, Dr.ir Dries van Nimwegen, en Prof.dr. Dirk Roekaerts) wrote about the winner:

“Excellent contribution to better understanding of Pickering emulsion systems.”
“A textbook example of combining basic transport phenomena with reaction kinetics to describe and understand a complex system.”
“Nice combination of theory and experiment.”
“High quality was maintained by proceeding step by step.”

The winner of the VerDelFT master study price 2023 is Aza Alawi. Aza, under the guidance of Dr. Valeria Garbin worked on Pickering emulsion reactors as an alternative to stirred vessels. The title of her Master's thesis was “Continuous-Flow Reactions in Pickering Emulsions”.

Aza wins the VerDelFT study prize of € 1.500 and received a certificate.
