Expansion supercomputer DelftBlue ready for use!
The computing power of supercomputer DelftBlue has been expanded and the new hardware is ready for use as of 8 January 2024. This means 75% more connected computing for research and education in Delft! TU Delft's high-performance computing centre (DHPC) is designed to meet researchers' growing need for extensive computing power to solve complex problems in physics, mechanics and dynamics.
The system is characterized by flexibility, speed and user-friendliness.
DelftBlue went live in two phases. Phase 1 went into production in June 2022 and at that time offered 11,000 CPU cores in more than 200 compute nodes. Now, with the commissioning of the phase 2 hardware, the configuration has expanded to 17,000 CPU cores in more than 300 nodes. Also, 10 new GPU nodes have been added, doubling the GPU capacity to meet the needs of our users.
New generation hardware
The new generation of Intel Xeon processors ("Sapphire Rapids") features 33% more cores per node (64) and about twice the memory bandwidth compared to phase 1 nodes.
New specialized instructions for half precision arithmetic ("Advanced Matrix Extensions", AMX) make them competitive for AI applications.
The forty new A100 GPU's have a large high-bandwidth memory of 80GB, more computing power and almost twice the memory bandwidth of the Phase 1 V100s cards.
Login with NetID for employees
With a NetID, any employee can log in and experiment as a 'guest user' with limited capacity. Requesting full access to the 'fairshare' of a faculty or project can then be done through the Self Service Portal.
