Kennis van mieren leidt tot doorbraak in robotnavigatie
Heb je je ooit afgevraagd hoe insecten zich zo ver van hun thuisbasis kunnen bewegen maar toch altijd hun weg terug vinden? Naast biologen, zijn nu ook onderzoekers gespecialiseerd in AI voor kleine autonome robots op zoek naar het antwoord. Drone-onderzoekers van de TU Delft lieten zich inspireren door biologisch onderzoek over hoe mieren hun omgeving visueel herkennen en hun stappen zorgvuldig tellen om zo veilig thuis te komen.

On the sunny day of 25 June, the AI PhD Poster Day 2024 took place in the beautiful Hortus Botanicus of TU Delft. This day offered a blooming opportunity for PhD students to showcase their AI-related research, and exchange ideas with their peers from different faculties, and a big range of AI Labs.

David Abbink ontvangt Stevinpremie
David Abbink ontvangt dit jaar de NWO Stevinpremie. De Stevinpremie en de Spinozapremie zijn de hoogste Nederlandse onderscheidingen in de wetenschap. Ze worden jaarlijks uitgereikt aan vier mensen in totaal ‘voor hun uitmuntende, baanbrekende en inspirerende werk’, aldus NWO, die dit nieuws vandaag bekend maakt. Abbink ontvangt 1,5 miljoen euro te besteden aan wetenschappelijk onderzoek en kennisbenutting. Hij ontvangt de Stevinpremie met name voor de maatschappelijke impact van zijn onderzoek.

Spring Symposium 2024 showcases AI education
A line-up of interesting keynotes and workshops about AI Education captivated the audience on Tuesday June 4th during the fourth yearly Spring Symposium organised by TU Delft AI Initiative. From the fields of law and architecture to physics – a variety of disciplines were discussed, each showing how AI is a game changer for the future of their respective fields and the consequences this has for the education of the future. This underscores the importance of considering AI education across the whole university.

Intreerede: ‘We gaan naar een gedeelde cognitie van mens en robot’
Weten robots in de toekomst of een mens hen heeft gezien en laat de robot dit vervolgens ook weten? Als het aan TU Delft hoogleraar Joost de Winter ligt, wel. Hij werkt aan contactloze interactie tussen mens en machine. Het uiteindelijke doel is een samenvoeging van menselijke en robotische informatieverwerking. In zijn intreerede op 7 juni neemt De Winter je mee in de verschillende aspecten van zijn onderzoek maar schijnt ook zijn licht op de toenemende rol van AI binnen wetenschap en onderwijs.

EU Marie Curie-beurs 6G Evolution voor Aaron Ding
Aaron Ding heeft een EU Marie Curie-beurs ontvangen. Hij en zijn team onderzoeken de komende vier jaar robuuste oplossingen om veerkrachtige 6G digitale infrastructuur te bieden bij zowel cyber- als fysieke aanvallen in toekomstige 6G-netwerken. Er is een totaalbedrag van €1,5 miljoen toegewezen aan het consortium ENSURE-6G.

Sander Renes krijgt NWO financiering voor automatisering van economische gedragsexperimenten
Sander Renes is een van de 60 onderzoekers die financiering krijgt vanuit de SGW Open Competitie XS van NWO. Dit zijn subsidies van maximaal € 50.000, bedoeld om veelbelovende ideeën, vernieuwende en risicovolle initiatieven.

Assumptions of AI hiring and their impact on job seekers
Artificial intelligence (AI) has become increasingly common in job recruitment, offering automated online interviews and skill-assessment games. These tools promise efficiency and bias reduction but raise concerns about their validity, reliability and ethical implications. Research by Evgeni Aizenberg, Matthew J. Dennis and Jeroen van den Hoven sheds light on the assumptions underpinning AI hiring assessments.
