Building Physics & Services
The section Climate Design is a co-operation between the chairs Building Physics, Building Services and Climate Design & Sustainability. Embedded in the department of Building Technology, the section closely relates to each of the departments of the faculty of Architecture in Delft, to the department Design & Construction of the faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences in Delft and to the faculty of Architecture of Eindhoven University of Technology.
To play a leading role in connecting science and practise for the design and development of a comfortable and healthy (indoor) climate in and around buildings. The integration of sustainable climate concepts in the architectural design and urban planning plays a central role.
The section Climate Design educates students in the fields of Climate Design in general with fundamental knowledge of Building Physics (heat, air and moisture, sound, light, sun and wind) and of building services engineering (installation concepts and components). All this knowledge is placed within a context of sustainable building design. The aim is to achieve healthy, comfortable and low-energy buildings. The section is responsible for all education in these topics at the faculties of Architecture and Civil Engineering & Geosciences of TU Delft. Moreover, it participates in interdepartmental and inter-university master's degree courses, like Industrial Ecology.
The research of the section Climate Design is part of the Green Building Innovation program of the department Building Technology. The research is grouped around three main themes: "Comfortable en Healthy Environments" (Comfort), "Climate-Integrated Design" (Climate-ID) and "Low Exergy Design" (Exergy). Examples of research porjects are:
- Adaptive thermal comfort
- daylight and view / acoustics in the social service sector
- Climate responsive building elements / Climate adaptive skins
- Innovative thermal insulation systems
- Synergy of regional planning and exergy / Energy potential mapping
- Sustainable project development 2015
