"How Wall-E contributes to Europe’s autonomy"
By Feven Desta and Reza Sabzevari

Almost everyone knows Wall-E: the robot from the Disney-Pixar film that collects rubbish and compresses it into tiny cubes, thereby cleaning up the mess on our planet. But what does this little robot left alone in an abandoned, polluted environment have to do with both Feven Desta's (Civil Engineering and Geosciences) and Reza Sabzevari's (Aerospace Engineering) scientific work? And how does Feven's and Reza's work contribute to the Europe of the future, a Europe that is more autonomous when it comes to critical raw materials?

Feven and Reza will talk about it in a duo lunch lecture taking place during Materials Week, on Thursday 16 May 2024. During Materials Week, TU Delft will show what it is doing in the field of Critical Raw Materials (CRM). CRM are raw materials (metals/minerals) that are not available to us because they come from other (distant) countries, but that we do need in large quantities. For the energy transition, for example, but also for our urban planning, for the digital transition, for aerospace and defence technology.

Feven is an Assistant Professor in Raw material characterisation and Spatio-temporal modelling of mine waste systems and Reza is Associate Professor of Perception and Robotics.
