Dr. ir. Koning, J.I.J.C. de
Jotte de Koning is assistant professor of Design for Sustainability Transitions at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering.
Jotte conducts research on the intersection of the fields of design for sustainability and systems thinking. She is looking at how design and designers can contribute to the societal challenges of our time; or how to change complex systems through design. These systems are for example the agrofood system, the energy system or cities as complex systems. Her expertise lies in strategic design, service design, behavioural change, transition management and sustainable innovation. And, she is always on the lookout to make food part of her research topics.
Academic Background
These systems are for exampleinclude the agrofood system, the energy system or cities as complex systems. Her expertise lies in strategic design, service design, behavioural change, transition management and sustainable innovation. And, she is always on the lookout to make food part of her research topics.
Jotte is an Industrial and Strategic Design Engineer by education. She has a background in different (design) fields and experience working in different countries. This is reflected in an interest in interdisciplinary and inter-cultural projects.
Jotte obtained a PhD at the Delft University of Technology on Sustainable Food by Design (2017). During four years of doctoral research she focused on co-creation between citizens and food initiatives in urban Vietnam. Together with local partners in Vietnam she developed, tested and applied co-creation methods to contribute to a more sustainable consumption pattern. The relevance and potential of collaborative and creative processes for sustainability transitions is still a central theme in her research activities.
Jotte has published articles dealing with sustainable consumption behaviour among the urban middle class of Vietnam; articles on the concept of co-creation and participatory design; and during her postdoctoral research she has published articles on participatory design and dealing with sustainability transitions in cities.
