Travel & Accommodation

Delft is a beautiful city in the province of South Holland. Situated between Rotterdam and The Hague, Delft is very well connected with airports (Amsterdam Schipol and Rotterdam-The Hague) and other Dutch cities by trains, buses and trams. Despite the presence of the Delft University of Technology and many companies and start-ups, resulting in an international population, Delft retains the flavour of a traditional touristic place. The city, in fact, has a rich historical and architectural heritage, with personalities like Johannes Vermeer, Antoni van LeeuwenhoekWillem van Oranje and Hugo de Groot among its notable citizens, and the iconic Oude Jan church with its skewed tower among its most characteristic buildings. Along its romantic channels, several pubs and restaurants on terraces render the city lively during summertime.

How to get to Delft

  • By car: Delft is easily reached by car. Coming from Amsterdam or Schiphol, it is recommended to exit the A4 motorway at one of two places: exit n.11 (Rijswijk) or exit n.14 (Delft); coming from Rotterdam, Delft has three exits off the A13 motorway (n.8, n.9, and n.10). The city centre is best reached via exit n.9 (Delft). During the weekend, this exit can be busy with IKEA shoppers; so, it can be best to take exit n.8 (Delft-Noord).
  • By train: Delft has two railway stations: Delft (near the city centre) and Delft Campus (Delft's southern residential area). (Direct) train connections run from (check www.ns.nl for timetable and tickets price):
    • Den Haag Central Station or Hollands Spoor (approx. duration: 10 min)
    • Schiphol Airport (approx. duration: 45 min)
    • Amsterdam (approx. duration: 1 h)
    • Rotterdam (approx. duration: 15 min)
  • By plane: Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is 45 min away by train, with an intercity direct connection. In case you get on a non-direct train, you have to change at Leiden Centraal or The Hague Hollands Spoor (often called Den Haag HS). If you prearrange a taxi to pick you up at Schiphol, expect to pay up to € 120. Rotterdam The Hague Airport is only a few kilometres away but has poor public transport connections. RET city bus 33 runs frequently to Rotterdam Centraal Station and takes you there in about 20 min. From there, it is a 15-min long train ride to Delft. When taking an airport taxi from Rotterdam The Hague Airport, expect to pay up to € 40 for the trip.
