Electromagnetic design of PFC boost converters using GaN devices
This project focuses on design and optimization of a GaN device based high frequency PFC boost converter. The emerging GaN power semiconductors, as promised by their material properties, are promising for boosting performances of existing Silicon device based applications and enabling new applications. Actual performances of GaN products needs to be evaluated to reveal applications that the benefits of GaN can be maximized. To realize the benefits, passive components, control techniques, etc. that are suitable for high frequency operation needs to be investigated and applied. Optimal design of a corresponding prototype shall be done to prove and demonstrate the potentials of GaN devices in uplifting the performances of power electronics systems.
