Influence of the end user in a LEAN design process

Research in cooperation with architectural office FARO and housing company Portaal.
Main Research question here is: Where and to what extent would residents may want to influence certain issues in the design process?

The research is organized around the following variables:

  • Degree of involvement; Involvement of end users in the process may consist of only being informed or to participate in decisions or to residents who become designers. The extent in which residents may be involved will dependent on their (individual) needs and may change during the design and construction process.
  • Desirability; In the study we thus determine the desirability of influence from the residents perspective. The desirability’s of residents are monitored for effectiveness. This particular relates with the timing and the ability of residents.
  • Possibilities; Desirability is related to possibilities. The possibilities include two perspectives. The first is about the possibilities of residents, such as financial resources or the ability overview issues of maintenance. Secondly it relates the capabilities of other actors in the process. Are wishes feasible?
  • Building Process versus living process; Residents are focused on living; the building is only one agent. This is different from the perceptive of the actors. The house is not a product but the start of a process (living). Influence of residents is strongly determined by this perspective and makes it necessary to make decisions in construction mainly from the perspective of the ultimate enjoyment.
