Within the joint research project 'Sustainable Deltas' with lead PI Henk Schuttelaars (DIAM), the project 'Salt intrusion: Understanding the Pearl River Estuary by Modelling and field Experiments' was funded (2 PhD students and 1 PostDoc). The overall aim of the project is to understand the three-dimensional salt transport mechanisms, and their sensitivity to variations in external forcing and geometry/bathymetry, with a specific focus on the Pearl River Estuary in China.

He won the contest with the paper ‘An Element-Matched Band-Pass Delta-Sigma ADC for Ultrasound Imaging’. Michele worked in Michiel Pertijs' group at the Electronic Instrumentation Lab and obtained his MSc Degree earlier this year.

Marco’s innovation called ‘Luxsenz’ won the Accenture Innovation Award 2017 in the category Perfect Cities. Luxsenz uses sunlight to allow objects to transmit information in a sustainable and privacy-preserving manner.

Researchers from the Leiden University Medical Center (LUMC) and the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) have presented an interactive technique in the scientific journal, Nature Communications. The technique enables them to identify rare cell types among hundreds of other kinds.

At the Dutch national PV conference "Sunday" in Bussum on the 8th of November 2017 Prof. Miro Zeman from Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) presented a crystalline silicon solar cell with the conversion efficiency of 23.0%. This is the highest efficiency of crystalline silicon solar cell fully processed in The Netherlands.

Peter Palensky was elected IEEE IES AdCom Member-at-large last week in Beijing. This is a 3-year appointment in the Administrative Committee of the IEEE Industrial Electronics Society.. With this role, he will be sitting at the centre of the most important IEEE journals, conferences, et cetera.

Paul Marcelis, Msc. student in our Embedded Systems Group, has been awarded with a ‘silver’ Young Talent Award within the Computer Science category. Every year, professors in The Netherlands can send in Msc. theses of their students to KHMW. The KNVI (royal Dutch association for computer science professionals) reviewed all theses within the computer science category and selected Paul’s thesis as second best.

Felienne Hermans, docent Software Engineering, heeft vandaag een SURF Onderwijsaward ontvangen. SURF reikte tijdens haar Onderwijsdagen prijzen uit aan mensen die het verschil maken in onderwijsinnovatie. Hermans ontving de prijs in de categorie docenten voor haar inspanningen om studenten en kinderen te leren programmeren, en te onderzoeken hoe je dat het beste kunt doen.

Leon Helsloot, a member of Zekeriya Erkin's (Cyber Security) group, graduated on 30 August with a 9.5 for his Master's thesis, Preserving Privacy through Cryptography in Online Behavioural Advertising. His thesis has been awarded with the title Best Master Thesis of EEMCS 2017.

From plug and play enzymes to bioconcrete and from DNA sequencing to biosensors: bioengineering is one of TU Delft’s fastest growing research fields. That will be evident when Delft Bioengineering Institute is officially launched on Tuesday, 27 March 2018.

Every year, the Stichting Compositio Mathematica, awards the Stieltjesprijs for the best Dutch thesis. All Dutch theses automatically qualify for this award.

DESHIMA is a completely new type of astronomical instrument with which a 3D map of the early universe can be constructed. In early October, Dutch and Japanese researchers installed the DESHIMA measurement instrument under the ASTE telescope in Chile. Over the past few days, DESHIMA has recorded light from an astronomical source for the first time. The development represents a significant milestone in the process of making the instrument operational.

Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) has announced plans to award five Delft Global Scholarships to outstanding female students from sub-Saharan Africa in 2018. The scholarships have been made possible by a donation to the Delft University Fund by Booking.com. Each scholarship will cover the full cost of a two-year Master of Science programme, including living expenses.

Fai Tong Si (PhD student) and Ronald van Schie (MSc student) of the research group Photovoltaic Materials and Devices (PVMD) have won the Best Student Award and the Best Poster Award, respectively, at the European solar cell conference (EUPVSEC) in Amsterdam in the field Silicon Photovoltaics.

Climbing stairs, getting up from a low sofa and walking across an uneven surface, that was not a problem for paraplegic Ruben de Sain during the Cybathlon Experience on October 7, thanks to an exoskeleton, a supportive robotic suit, built by TU Delft students. The competition in Germany for bionic paraplegic athletes saw the students demonstrate the potential of an exoskeleton as an aid in daily life for people with paralysed legs.

Stephanie Wehner (QuTech) was appointed as an Antoni van Leeuwenhoek professor at the end of 2016 by the TU Delft. These chairs are intended for the promotion of bright young minds to professorships. Friday October 6th is the date of her inaugural speech in the auditorium.

Alessandro Bozzon (Web Information Systems) has been awarded the IBM Faculty Award, in the section “Cognitive Computing and IoT” for his work on Enterprise Crowdsourcing developed in the context of the IBM-TU Delft CIC collaboration.

The E-magazine published by the Dutch Blockchain Coalition today reveals how blockchain applications can help to realise further advances in our economy and society. At the same time the various articles and interviews also make it clear that a lot still needs to happen at the technical, societal and legal levels to ensure that blockchain becomes a reliable and future-proof exchange system. In the E-magazineyou can read about the coalitions' ambition, the action agenda that it is currently realising and the use cases that the coalition partners are working on. Some of the coalitions experts are interviewed about the importance of adequate legislation as well as the need for good communication about the impact of blockchain on our everyday lives.

Cyclist Aniek Rooderkerken broke the Dutch speed record for women last Saturday, clocking 121.5 km/h to win the World Human-Powered Speed Challenge in the Nevada desert. In this competition for the most innovative cycles and riders from all over the world, Rooderkerken was riding the VeloX 7: a high-tech aerodynamic recumbent bike designed and built by the Human Power Team, a group of students from TU Delft and VU Amsterdam.

The Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centre for BOLD Cities plans to put 'Big, Open and Linked Data’ techniques to a new use. It aims to use data research to help track down young people who are not in employment or in receipt of benefits, no longer attend school, and are not officially registered.

PhD candidates Cinzia Silvestri, William Quiros Solano and Nikolas Gaio (start-up Biond ) and Lina Sarro (ECTM) have successfully applied for a NWO Take-Off Grant (Phase 1) for organ-on-a-chip development.

The paper “Clarity is a Worthwhile Quality: On the Role of Task Clarity in Microtask Crowdsourcing” has won the Douglas Engelbart Best Paper Award at the 28th ACM Conference on Hypertext and Social Media (Hypertext 2017) conference, Prague, Czech Republic.

Students Ide Swager and Menno Gravemaker (start-up Momo Medical) and Wouter Serdijn (Bio-Informatics) successfully applied for an NWO Take-Off Grant (Phase 1) with their project proposal “Improving pressure ulcer prevention with smart mobility monitoring in healthcare institutions”.

At the coming IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium (IUS) , five papers will be presented that are (co)authored by the Ultrasound ASICs group of Michiel Pertijs. IUS is IEEE’s primary forum for medical and industrial ultrasound research, and will be held in Washington in September.

Researchers from various institutions, including SRON and Delft University of Technology, have demonstrated that it is possible to make a highly sensitive space camera for far-infrared astronomy by using a special type of superconducting detector.

Last week, during IFOT, 'EEMCS in Concert' took place. A unique concert with performances by students and staff of this faculty. They combined music and technology in a smart way. The special effects were quite impressive in the dark. On YouTube you can find a couple of video's from the concert.

Daniël Koppenol, together with Fred Vermolen (both TU Delft), has developed various mathematical models to simulate the healing of wounds, in particular burns, with the aim of improving healing. As Vermolen points out, collaboration between the disciplines of mathematics, biology and medicine is still in its infancy, but it would offer great opportunities. Koppenol has been awarded a PhD for this work at TU Delft on Thursday, 15 June.

Friday 9th June was the day of the grand opening of the largest PV system with so-called bifacial modules, the grounds of Tempress in Vaasen. The Photovoltaic Materials and Devices group is involved with this project and Arthur Weeber gave a presentation on behalf of TU Delft and ECN.
