Contestable AI gives citizens more control over smart technology
The use of AI is on the rise across society, including by governments. For example, AI is used in the scan cars that drive around cities and use machine vision to monitor public space. AI increases efficiency, but can we, as citizens, trust its decisions? With Contestable AI, we design decision-making systems that allow citizens to express disagreement throughout their lifecycle. This is a way to ensure that government AI is worthy of people’s trust.

Dashboard sparks the growth of urban greenery
Greenery makes cities more liveable. But how do you ensure urban greenery flourishes? Sanne Keizer devoted her graduation project to unearthing this answer, and in doing so designed a dashboard that monitors and predicts the evolution of urban greenery. "Urban greening needs more than a four-year policy period to be flourish," she says. Sanne’s project received a perfect score.

Data and the transformation of design research
The rise of data technologies is changing the game for design researchers. As design moves towards complex societal challenges, design tools need to evolve by integrating the benefits of both humans and advanced technologies. For her PhD, Jiwon Jung explored how designers can work with data scientists and machine learning in developing digital health solutions, proposing that there is a lot to learn from each other.

Associate Professor of Computational Design and Fabrication at TU Delft | IDE Jun Wu has been awarded a Vidi grant of 800.000 euros. His research will focus on space-time optimization for additive manufacturing.

Professor Bregje van Eekelen receives double appointment in Leiden-Delft-Erasmus alliance
Professor Bregje van Eekelen received a second appointment at Erasmus University at Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences with the teaching assignment Smart City Design - Design, Culture and Society. She already holds the chair of Design, Culture and Society at TU Delft | IDE. Van Eekelen's appointment is in the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus cooperation context.

Mobile forest project aims to green the city together with citizens
Increasing and prolonged heat is hitting Dutch cities. Trees can cool the environment by up to 15 degrees. But they are often considered last in urban development. The T-Roffa Lab Project in Rotterdam, which officially started on June 21, uses a mobile forest to investigate how we can develop cities together with citizens and make cities climate-resilient through the placement of greenery.

IDE researcher receives SSMO Haftka Young Investigator Award 2023
TU Delft | Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering Associate Professor Jun Wu was presented with the prestigious ISSMO Haftka Young Investigator Award 2023 during the 15th World Congress of Structural and Multidisiplinary Optimisation (WCSMO-15) in Cork, Ireland on 8 June 2023.

Studio Groot to distribute Torrie toys from Healthy Storytelling project
Excess weight and obesity are increasingly common in our society. In response to this, researchers from the TU Delft | Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering’s (IDE) Healthy Storytelling project began investigating how to foster conversations around topics such as these. And now, one of the products they designed to help with this task - the Torrie plush toy – will be distributed by Studio Groot.

West Coast Collaborations — IDE delegation visits Stanford, Berkeley, IDEO and more

Excellence Fund awarded to Healthcare Systems Professor John Clarkson

Digital payments become safer for the visually impaired
Paying digitally with your bank card is an everyday affair for most of us. But what if you are partially sighted or blind? Then you have to trust that the amount you pay is indeed correct. With the help of research by master student Jackie (Yongqing) Fei, the design of the ING payment app was adapted to overcome this shortcoming.
