Dr. ir. Joustra, J.J.

Jelle Joustra is an Assistant Professor in creating fully circular product and materials at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering.

Academic Background

Jelle Joustra did his bachelor Industrial Design Engineering at TU Delft, in which one of the design projects resulted in building a test setup to measure the thermal conductivity of plastics. After the bachelor, he participated in the Nuon Solar Team, to design, build and race the solar car Nuna5 in the World Solar Challenge in Australia and the Suzuka Dream Cup in Japan.

In his master Integrated Product Design at TU Delft, he was awarded the Philips Design Award for the domestic appliances project: Coffee!

For his graduation project he developed a new set of sailing gear for Olympic dinghy sailors, optimised for thermal comfort during a race. The project was awarded the International Sports Engineering Association Student Prize.

After his graduation from TU Delft, Jelle worked as Product Developer at Hukseflux Thermal Sensors. His tasks included the design, testing and preparation of new products for series production. He designed several types of sensors for measurement of heat flux, thermal conductivity and solar radiation.

He completed his PhD at Circular Product Design, in the department of Sustainable Design Engineering. The PhD research was embedded in the European project “EcoBulk”, a large scale demonstration effort to complete a full cycle with composite materials in the circular economy. Jelle contributed by researching new reuse pathways and design strategies.

Currently, Jelle works as assistant professor on creating fully circular products and materials at the Design for Sustainability research group. His research and design projects have a special focus on the assembly of products at the macro (product architecture) as well as microscale (materials composition).
