Ir. Kernan Freire, S

Samuel Kernan Freire is a PhD candidate at the department of Sustainable Design Engineering, Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. His research is focused on how manufacturing workers can be cognitively supported using AI-based tools. This work is part of COALA, a European Commission funded H2020 project. The goal of COALA is to develop a human-centered, trustworthy and voice-enabled digital assistant for the manufacturing workforce. Samuel is especially interested in how AI and design can enable the capture and transfer of expert knowledge.

Academic Background

Samuel's master's graduation project involved developing a Conversational AI Agent that could automatically generate a maintenance report based on a conversation with an industrial maintenance worker. During his undergraduate studies, he interned and worked for various companies, including high-tech startups and a design agency, Spark design & innovation.
