Collaboration between Braun Frankfurt, TU Delft, and Politecnico di Milano

Nieuws - 22 november 2023 - Communication

On 10 November, 17 students from the TU Delft | Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering master course Advanced Concept Design (ACD) and 20 students from Politecnico di Milano presented their work at the Braun office in Frankfurt. Their presentations were based on the work they had been doing on 'The Future of Cooking' for Braun-Delonghi.

The ‘triangle’ collaboration resulted in the sharing of visions and ideas; as well as a tour of Braun’s impressive collection, which included designs by Dieter Rams. The highlight of the day was attending the opening of an exhibition about his work, where 91-year-old Dieter Rams was the main guest.

Advanced Concept Design (ACD)

Through the Advanced Concept Design (ACD) IPD master course, IDE students had the chance to participate in this unforgettable day. The course is designed to give students the opportunity to work on real-life assignments that are co-created by the course’s coordinators and partner organisation.

ACD has a strong focus on research and design integration in the areas of culture, ergonomics, technology and visualisation. These areas of expertise, amongst others, contribute to the concept design project that the students work on throughout the course. The current ACD course includes the involvement of 200 students, 12 clients, and 40 staff members.

The power of collaborations

One of the main goals of this collaborative effort is to assist TU Delft and Politecnico di Milano in comparing and exchanging experiences and knowledge in a bid to help improve one another’s education systems.

The collaboration between the two universities and Braun will continue, with students from both design schools having the opportunity to exhibit their final concepts for the 'Future of Cooking' project at the Angewandte Kunst Museum. Their work will be shown from 24 February to 24 March 2024 and will run simultaneously with the Dieter Rams exhibition.

A special thanks goes out to Markus Orthey (Braun Design Director) for organising this special day for our students, as well as IDE staff members Marie-Claire Looze (ACD design coach) and Marijke Dekker (ACD course coordinator).

About Dieter Rams and his exhibition

Dieter Rams (1932) is a renowned German designer who has always been interested in the possibilities and fields of action for younger generations of designers. Rams’ motto, ‘Less, but better’, is proving to be more and more relevant in relation to the current opinion on sustainability, the environment, and design. Dieter Rams’ work has created a path that can be followed and developed further by current and future designers.

The temporary exhibition, Dieter Rams Forum, at the Museum Angewandte Kunst aims to create an environment in which knowledge can be transferred and shared between nationalities and generations. This was tested and proven to be true when TU Delft and Polimi students and staff, as well as designers from different generations mingled at the exhibition’s grand opening on 10 November.

The temporary Dieter Rams Forum will run from 11 November 2023 – 24 March 2024. For more information about it, click here

The exhibition is organised by the Dieter und Ingeborg Rams Foundation.
