MSc. Persaud, S.M.

Stefan Persaud is a lecturer at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering.

Born in Purmerend (North Holland province) in a family with two brothers and one sister. I have a bi-cultural background in Surinam and The Netherlands, which enriches a diverse perspective on life and education. Besides being a father of 5 daughters and happily married, I practise taekwon-do and play bass guitar in two Delft bands. When I have time left I ride my motorcycle to the Ardennes or just around town.

I consider myself an Educationalist in Design Engineering or Educational Designer. I design learning journeys for engineering courses with a student-centered approach. Teambuilding, personal development and inclusiveness are my speciality. Methods I use are based on Dialogue or Non-Violent Communication. This makes a combination considered opposites by many: engineering science + social science.

Academic Background

After working in the industry as a product engineer for several years, developing and licensing a patent, I was invited to teach at Utrecht University by a former intern. She brought me to this journey into Design education. My wife is trained in padagogy and guided me into human/personal development. At Rotterdam University I followed many courses in teaching, special education, coordinated many courses as senior lecturer, which led to becoming programme coordinator for Inclusive Education, teaching other teachers and improving the overall level of education for the Institue of Engineering and Applied Sience.

During my work in Rotterdam, I met Bas Flipsen when he was Lector (professor) for Sustainable Development in Rotterdam. We worked together for several years, published an article about sustainable teaching, and in 2018 he invited me to come and work at IDE. Now we have joined forces designing education for the master programme and doing educational research. This has resulted in a Comenius Teaching Fellowship where we explore and develop teaching methods based on Theory U for Designers.

My true mission is making the best education possible for everyone, teachers and students, to become lifelong learners. To make their time at IDE a wonderful experience and a starting point for their future career. To ingnite new BSc and MSc professionals to do good for the environment and each other in their own way.
