Sustainable Design Engineering

The department of Sustainable Design Engineering (SDE) focuses on applying responsive technologies on the development and design of new products and services. The dynamics in this field are primarily determined by the pace of change in society, in which new developments in human needs and technological possibilities follow each other rapidly. These include new materials and production techniques, ICT and Internet of Things, healthcare, sustainability and striving towards a circular economy. The department strives to integrate specific technologies in a new, flexible design process.

Within the faculty, the SDE department is closely involved in education in the Bachelor's degree programme, in particular in the technology subjects. In addition, the department provides the Integrated Product Design (IPD) Master's programme, together with the Human-Centered Design department. The aim is to ensure that education and research are closely interlinked, so that students acquire relevant technological knowledge that will have a great impact on technical design in coming years.

Peter Vink: Chair of Sustainable Design Engineering

Prof dr Peter Vink is chairing the department Sustainable Design Engineering since 2015, where he motivates and supports more than 100 teachers, researchers and PhDs in the fields ‘sustainability’, ‘materials & manufacturing’ and ‘ICT/IoT/AI’. Peter likes designing/adapting the latest technology to how humans interact and behave. He did write more than 250 papers and books in the field of human-technology interaction, with special attention for comfort, performance and interior design of aircrafts and cars. His latest book is ‘vehicle seat comfort and design’ (Pumbo, 2016), which is a follow up of ‘aircraft interior comfort and design’ co-authored by Klaus Brauer, one of the leading designers of the Boeing 787 interior (CRC Press, Boca Raton, 2011). Peter Vink received his Masters degree at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam at the faculty of Human Movement Sciences and he received his PhD degree in 1989 at the Medical Faculty of the University of Leiden in the field of biomechanics. He is in the editorial board of scientific journals (e.g. Applied Ergonomics), chairing the jury of the Crystal Cabin Award (the most prestigious prize in aircraft interiors) and won the Hal W Hendrick Award in 2011, which is  for a non-U.S. citizen who has made outstanding contributions to the human factors/ergonomics field.

Current  research projects concern the design of the interior of the Flying V aircraft. Peter Vink is also involved in car interior design and testing in a project with BMW (currently 3 PhD students), in designing and testing aircraft seats (2 PhD students). Also, August 1st the 3-year project ComfDemo will start, a Horizon2020 project of 1.2 MEur, coordinated  by Peter Vink, in which a jacket is developed with sensors recording CO2, temperature, vibration, pressure, posture, sound, number of movements etc. Additionally projects with KLM, Embraer, Ipeco, Octaspring and Airbus are running, in which master and PhD students are involved.
