Malte von der Burg and Marta Ribeiro attend SESAR Innovation Days 2023

At the end of November, we (Malte von der Burg and Marta Ribeiro) had a great experience of participating in SESAR Innovation Days 2023 in Seville. This conference is the main dissemination activity for SESAR Joint Undertaking’s results. Additionally, the conference aims for a balance between academia and industry, with exploratory research from both sides being shown.

We were joined by our TU Delft colleagues from Control & Simulation, with whom we explored the beautiful city of Seville. We were welcomed with 20 degrees, which was a nice break from the traditional Dutch weather.

Malte presented his work on “Multi-Agent Planning for Autonomous Airport Surface Movement Operations”, covering state-of-the-art multi-agent motion planning algorithms to the requirements of taxiing operations. His presentation was very well received, with many insightful remarks on path planning. Marta received 3rd place in the Young Scientist award for her PhD work entitled “Conflict Resolution at High Traffic Densities with Reinforcement Learning”. Her research falls within the very active field of employing reinforcement learning to aviation problems, highlighting the potential of this tool. Finally, we had the opportunity to discuss innovation with colleagues from Cranfield and the Singapore University, where the next International Conference on Research in Air Transportation conference will be.

The conference ended with a site visit to Seville Airport, emphasising the investment in autonomous tools ongoing at the airport.
