The idea that there is such a thing as “creativity”, and that it can be cultivated, is surprisingly recent, as the new book by IDE Lecturer Samuel W. Franklin ‘The Cult of Creativity’ reveals.

The book ‘Mobility | Society - Society Seen through the Lens of Mobility’ will be launched on 23 October at Dutch Design Week. It brings together many experts from diverse disciplines. It offers a variety of insights on the potential that mobility has in shaping the future of society.

What is a restaurant without its dining guests? What is a park without people walking their dog or kids playing? We are social beings and socializing is essential for our wellbeing. But how do we assess whether people from all walks of life are able to meet at these public places? This question motivated Vasileios Milias, PhD Candidate at TU Delft’s Industrial Design Engineering faculty to design a mapping tool which measures the concept of ‘co-accessibility’.

Every year, 150 million auto-injectors, used in the event of a severe allergic reaction for example, are burned after use. in the process, 120,000 tonnes of CO2 are emitted. Emma Linders, freshly graduated at the IDE faculty, designed a solution that reduces emissions by 60%. With the YpsoMate Refill, a reusable emergency pen, she won the James Dyson Award 2023. The latest news from TU Delft at Dutch Design Week 2023

At the end of August, Assistant Professor Zjenja Doubrovski and Associate Professor Jun Wu had the pleasure of co-hosting the IDEA League Summer School on Computational Design for Additive Manufacturing. The duo, along with their other co-organisers, welcomed a multidisciplinary group of students and young researchers from eight universities to IDE.

The use of AI is on the rise across society, including by governments. For example, AI is used in the scan cars that drive around cities and use machine vision to monitor public space. AI increases efficiency, but can we, as citizens, trust its decisions? With Contestable AI, we design decision-making systems that allow citizens to express disagreement throughout their lifecycle. This is a way to ensure that government AI is worthy of people’s trust.

Greenery makes cities more liveable. But how do you ensure urban greenery flourishes? Sanne Keizer devoted her graduation project to unearthing this answer, and in doing so designed a dashboard that monitors and predicts the evolution of urban greenery. "Urban greening needs more than a four-year policy period to be flourish," she says. Sanne’s project received a perfect score.

The rise of data technologies is changing the game for design researchers. As design moves towards complex societal challenges, design tools need to evolve by integrating the benefits of both humans and advanced technologies. For her PhD, Jiwon Jung explored how designers can work with data scientists and machine learning in developing digital health solutions, proposing that there is a lot to learn from each other.

Today marks a milestone moment at the TU Delft | Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering, as we celebrate our 8,000th graduate - Yilin Quan. Yilin graduated with his work on the CreatOrg Workshop, which helps boost the flow of creativity in organisations.

Vote for the 4D PICTURE team to win a Computable Award

Associate Professor of Computational Design and Fabrication at TU Delft | IDE Jun Wu has been awarded a Vidi grant of 800.000 euros. His research will focus on space-time optimization for additive manufacturing.

Professor Bregje van Eekelen received a second appointment at Erasmus University at Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences with the teaching assignment Smart City Design - Design, Culture and Society. She already holds the chair of Design, Culture and Society at TU Delft | IDE. Van Eekelen's appointment is in the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus cooperation context.

Increasing and prolonged heat is hitting Dutch cities. Trees can cool the environment by up to 15 degrees. But they are often considered last in urban development. The T-Roffa Lab Project in Rotterdam, which officially started on June 21, uses a mobile forest to investigate how we can develop cities together with citizens and make cities climate-resilient through the placement of greenery.

This year, 43 students from the TU Delft | Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering’s bachelor elective course, ‘Codesign in Services’, were tasked with exploring concrete Diversity and Inclusion (D&I) issues that are faced by the people of TU Delft. IDE Publication Highlights (Week 25 2023)

TU Delft | Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering Associate Professor Jun Wu was presented with the prestigious ISSMO Haftka Young Investigator Award 2023 during the 15th World Congress of Structural and Multidisiplinary Optimisation (WCSMO-15) in Cork, Ireland on 8 June 2023.

Excess weight and obesity are increasingly common in our society. In response to this, researchers from the TU Delft | Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering’s (IDE) Healthy Storytelling project began investigating how to foster conversations around topics such as these. And now, one of the products they designed to help with this task - the Torrie plush toy – will be distributed by Studio Groot.

Did you know that the European cultural and creative industries (CCIs) are cumulatively larger than the European automotive industry? This places Europe in a unique position to tackle its societal challenges through innovation. And to enable this sector to reach its full potential, IDE was co-selected to develop innovation policies for the European Commission.

On 24 May, ID Education hosted the 2023 Pluim Awards at the ID Kafee. The annual event was a success with beautiful weather, fantastic company, and plenty of awards given out. Yesterday the Crystal Cabin Awards Association presented its coveted trophies for innovation in cabin technology and passenger experience. The winner of the 2023 University category was the Lightweight Aircraft Seating team from IDE. Congratulations!

How can automated vehicles optimally support our mobility needs without annoying or even endangering us? How can rapid market penetration be achieved through increased trust in these systems? Answers to these questions are provided by the EU research project HADRIAN, which has finished this month, where TU Delft was one of its members.
