Julieta Bolaños Arriola is a PhD candidate in Circular Product Design at the Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering. She researches safety aspects in the circular economy from a product design perspective, including safe repairs and the presence of hazardous substances in products.

Academic Background

Julieta is currently pursuing a PhD, developing methods and guidelines to help designers consider safety in the product development process for safe cycling within a circular economy. She is a part of the Safe-by-Design project. She earned her bachelor's degree in Industrial Design at UNAM in Mexico City, Mexico, and studied abroad for a year at NTNU in Trondheim, Norway. She then completed her master's degree in Integrated Product Design at TU Delft, and obtained an annotation in technology in sustainable development. Her graduation project focused on redesigning a washing machine to suit service-based business models in collaboration with companies Bundles and Miele.

Prior to her studies at TU Delft, Julieta gained professional experience as an Industrial Designer at design firm TUUX in Mexico City, contributing to various projects involving the conceptualization and production of wooden structures. Before starting her PhD, she worked as a sustainability designer for the children's car seat brand BeSafe, where she analyzed the product line to identify opportunities for implementing circular design strategies. Julieta has also conducted research as a member of the Circular Product Design research group at IDE. She was first involved in the Safe by Design project, which explored design strategies to enhance safety in repairs performed by non-experienced repairers. Additionally, she contributed to the Sharepair project, which focused on facilitating digital tools to increase consumer product repairs and explored the feasibility of using additive manufacturing for producing spare parts.
