Simon van der Jagt is oprichter van het groene chipbedrijf Nowi. Hij ziet een grote meerwaarde van designers in de techsector. “De universiteit heeft zoveel kennis. Maar welk concreet probleem wordt er voor de mensen opgelost? Waar en wanneer is technologie de oplossing? Ontwerpers stellen de juiste vragen.”

Researchers at the TU Delft | Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering have been granted NWO-KIC funding for three separate projects. Two projects focus on repairability and one tackles the challenge of reusable packaging. The IDE researchers involved are Ruth Mugge, Ruud Balkenende, Lise Magnier, Sonja van Dam and Conny Bakker. Het Open Education Stimulation Fund (OESF) 2023 heeft subsidies toegekend aan 5 projectvoorstellen van EWI-docenten en -onderzoekers. In totaal hebben 13 voorstellen van de TU Delft de subsidie ontvangen. Het OESF stimuleert medewerkers van de TU Delft om hun onderwijs te innoveren met open leermaterialen en open werkwijzen.

Valentijn Visch bedenkt oplossingen die mensen moeten motiveren om aandacht te hebben voor hun gezondheid. Hij gebruikt hier technieken voor zoals gamedesign en interactive storytelling. Samenwerking met onderzoekers binnen en buiten de TU Delft staat voor hem centraal. “Steeds meer health onderzoekers willen er een designer bij.”

Een goede pasvorm is bij veel producten wenselijk, maar het is extra belangrijk als het gaat om zoiets als een beademingsmasker voor jonge kinderen. Het is echter moeilijk om een goed passend masker te ontwerpen zonder relevante antropometrische gegevens. Voor haar PhD verzamelde en analyseerde Lyè Goto een unieke en gedetailleerde 3D-dataset die ontwerpers kan ondersteunen bij het verkrijgen van betere productmaten voor maskers en andere potentiële toepassingen.

IO onderzoekers hebben hard gewerkt aan de publicatie van hun onderzoek. Tot de hoogtepunten van deze week behoort een open-source artikel van promovendi Roos Teeuwen en Vasileios Milias, hoogleraar Alessandro Bozzon en universitair docent Achilleas Psyllidis.

TU Delft leads HEAT4ENERGY, a European consortium, dedicated to develop thermomagnetic devices and novel materials to harvest heat from data centres, food, pulp and paper industries and convert this waste heat to electricity. This project ticks all the boxes: energy transition, decarbonising, low and high power devices for conversion of waste heat to electricity, energy storage, finding alternatives for critical raw materials, developing new materials and most important of all: training of a next generation of European experts.

Last year, Juliana Goncalves and Carissa Champlin collaborated with City Science Lab at HafenCity University to co-curate the CityClimate meets Creative Coding festival in Hamburg. The aim of the festival was to bring science, the arts, data and planning support tools together to explore new approaches for addressing the climate crisis. I am delighted to share that the Festival was a big success!

Judith Rietjens is hoogleraar aan de faculteit Industrieel Ontwerpen aan de TU Delft en aan de afdeling Maatschappelijke Gezondheidszorg van het Erasmus MC. Op 26 januari geeft ze haar Inaugurele Rede in de Aula van de TU Delft. Hoe ontstond haar onderzoekslijn? Waarom kwam ze naar de faculteit Industrieel Ontwerpen? Hoe ziet zij het zorgsysteem verder evolueren? Je ontdekt het in dit interview.

“AI really is an uncaring technology”, says one of the participants of our workshop at DRIVE, organised by CLICKNL for the Dutch Design Week. Together with Meike Hardt, a fellow PhD researcher from AI DeMoS Lab, we were set to imagine a world where AI helped to create and maintain a more caring society. However, the proposed task turned out to be harder than it first appeared.

Several projects being led by or involving IDE researchers have secured kick-starter grants from the Convergence’s Resilient Delta Initiative.

Twee projecten waarbij bouwkunde onderzoekers zijn betrokken of hoofdaanvrager zijn, hebben onlangs toewijzing gekregen van financiering. Het betreft het project CIVILIAN over burgerbetrokkenheid en project Building 4 Belonging over eenzaamheid.

Gepersonaliseerde producten, zoals medische hulpmiddelen of veiligheidsschoenen, bieden talloze voordelen, maar er zijn uitdagingen bij het ontwerpen ervan. De huidige methoden omvatten vaak handmatige of halfgeautomatiseerde stappen, wat het moeizaam en tijdrovend maakt. Voor zijn PhD ontwikkelde Farzam Tajdari nieuwe methoden voor patroonherkenning, creëerde hij een geoptimaliseerd 4D-scanapparaat en produceerde hij een nieuwe 4D-dataset, waarmee hij aantoonde dat er een betere manier is om gepersonaliseerde ontwerpen te maken.

IO onderzoekers hebben hard gewerkt aan de publicatie van hun onderzoek. Tot de hoogtepunten van deze week behoort een artikel promovendus Zhuochao Peng, hoogleraar Pieter Desmet en universitair docent Haian Xue dat een uitgebreid overzicht geeft van het gebied van stemmingsgericht ontwerpen.

How can we ensure that everyone feels involved in the energy transition? Who inspires whom? And what is inspiring? IDE researchers Jotte de Koning and Sonja van Dam, together with University of Utrecht, have developed a practical handbook on how to develop your own social contagion strategy to make the energy transition really resonate with people.

Vijf masterstudenten van Integrated Product Design zijn afgereisd naar Dubai om hun project KUKUA te presenteren: een apparaat dat vroegtijdige ondervoeding bij kinderen in afgelegen gebieden van Oost-Afrika helpt diagnosticeren.

For the first half year of 2023, the TU Delft Climate Action Programme has granted 9 applications for the Seed Fund. The researchers come from the faculties CEG, TPM and 3ME.

We look back on a successful launch of the white paper “Repair in the Circular Economy”, which took place on 13 November. One hundred and twenty scientists, entrepreneurs, policymakers, administrators, students, and people from repair cafes joined the conversation.

On 10 November, 17 students from the IDE MSc course Advanced Concept Design and 20 students from Politecnico di Milano presented their work on 'The Future of Cooking' at the Braun office in Frankfurt.

With its seed funding programme, TU Delft Safety & Security Institute aims to increase the joint impact of safety & security research and education at TU Delft. Through a yearly call for proposals, researchers are invited to send in a one-page idea for a project or activity. The idea behind ‘seeding’ is that a small incentivisation (up to 15,000 euros) can make a difference. Ideas must work towards ‘a next step’; something bigger to be achieved with people from different disciplines and have societal relevance. Collaboration with non-academic stakeholders is encouraged. Since the start of the programme, 32 projects have been awarded. Six leading researchers present their funded projects here.
