IDE Research Assessment - Signed, sealed and delivered

In autumn 2020, an international committee tasked with assessing the research of TU Delft’s Faculty of Industrial Design Engineering came to a positive verdict. Their findings are summarised in the leaflet, Collaborate and Lead. But that wasn’t the end of the story.

“Plastic Identification Anywhere” helps informal recyclers to reduce plastic pollution

Plastic pollution is a well-known worldwide problem, sadly only getting worse due to our increased reliance on disposable single-use plastic products in the COVID-19 crisis. Against a backdrop of a growing need for plastic recycling, IDE student Jerry de Vos has developed an open-source handheld scanner to help small-scale recyclers from low and middle-income countries in this task.

Professor Richard Goossens features in TU Delft Tech for Health campaign

With a newly launched campaign, Tech for Health | Better healthcare thanks to Delft technology, the university is shining a spotlight on research innovations that contribute to improvements in healthcare, especially here in The Netherlands. Such research often involves collaboration with medical institutes such as Erasmus MC in Rotterdam and LUMC in Leiden. TU Delft alumni are invited to meet the scientists behind this exciting research and are asked to contribute to their important work.

Call for visual papers for the upcoming Design Research Society conference “LEARNxDESIGN 2021”

The Design Sketching international Special Interest Group (SIG), chaired by IDE lecturer Jan Willem Hoftijzer and Brigham Young University Associate Professor Bryan Howell, has broadened its scope. The Design Research Society has asked them to host and review “visual papers” submissions for its upcoming design conference LEARNxDESIGN 2021 taking place 24–26 September 2021, in collaboration with the Shandong University of Art & Design. Alongside, there will be a special track called “Sketching & Drawing Education and Knowledge”, chaired by the Design Sketching SIG.

Voorlichtingsactiviteiten bachelor- en masteropleidingen in maart 2021

Maart staat in het teken van voorlichtingsactiviteiten. Op 11 en 12 maart vinden de online Bachelor Open Dagen plaats, op 22 t/m 25 maart het online Master’s Week. Tijdens beide evenementen zijn via livestreams presentaties van de bachelor/master coördinatoren te bekijken, en is er de mogelijkheid om vragen te stellen. Ken je iemand die wellicht de bachelor IO wil volgen, of ben je zelf aan het oriënteren op een van de master programma’s, meld je dan aan om de livestream bij te wonen.

Four new PhD positions in Design@Scale Lab TU Delft

At the start of 2021, Industrial Design Engineering, TU Delft announced the foundation of the Design@Scale Lab. This new Delft AI Lab will focus on combining Artificial Intelligence with Human Intelligence to design at scale, increasing our ability to tackle systemic challenges. The D@S Lab, led by Professor Gerd Kortuem, is now looking four bright and motivated PhD candidates to join its ranks. Application is open until April 4th, 2021.

IDE participates in NWO Cross-Over RELEASE project

Jo van Engelen, Jan-Carel Diehl and Sine Celik are the members of the IDE team participating to the cross-over RELEASE project to develop large-scale energy storage technologies using hydrogen. Their research focuses on improving the social acceptance of these next-generation solutions through field lab experiments.

A comparison between the staff wellbeing surveys carried out last June and December show that people are holding on. However, if you have been feeling a bit less energetic during these winter months, you are certainly not alone. The man behind these surveys is IDE’s Derek Lomas, researcher at the Delft Institute of Positive Design.

Solutions for the society of the future: the Designing Sustainability Transitions minor

Tackling the wicked sustainability problems of future society. This was the bold ambition of the coaches and students of the of the second edition of the Designing Sustainability Transitions minor. They faced their challenge head-on with bravery, creativity and determination. Not even the wicked challenge of having to do this remotely deterred them from envisioning and configuring long-lasting solutions for such challenges.

IDE trio wins national design competition

Last year, the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science launched a competition to design the award for the newly established National Higher Education Prize (Nederlandse Hogeronderwijspremie ). While the prize is yet to be awarded, IDE students Eva Jonkers, Lin Zhou and Sanne ten Hoopen are already celebrating and look forward to seeing their design being lifted in the air by jubilant winners.

The “Co-creating the graduation journey” project has come to its second intervention. The previous participants of this 20-week long programme felt increasingly motivated in their graduation process thanks to the great energy and the empathy of the graduation community of IDE students. The Responsible Sensing Lab opens in Amsterdam

Last week was the launch of the Responsible Sensing Lab - a collaboration between Amsterdam Institute for Advanced Metropolitan Solutions (AMS) , the Digital City programme of Amsterdam and IDE. This initiative sees Professor Gerd Kortuem and PhD candidate Kars Alfrink exploring how social values can be integrated in the design of sensing systems in public space.

D@S Lab—Design@Scale with Human-AI Collaboration

Last week saw the launch of eight new Delft AI-Labs. Over the course of 2020-2021 TU Delft is establishing a total of 24 TU Delft AI-labs where experts in AI foundations work together with experts in AI challenges. Amongst the eight new labs announced last week, is D@S Lab, established by IDE’s Professor Gerd Kortuem, together with Assistant Professor Evangelos Niforatos. The D@S Lab will focus on the opportunity of combining Artificial Intelligence with Human Intelligence to design at scale, thereby increasing our ability to tackle systemic challenges.
